In today's passage the elders of Israel are rebuked and exhorted to leave the false idols in their hearts and to turn back to the Lord. Why would the elders have to turn? Remember in Chapter 8 when God was showing Ezekiel examples of the nation's (including the elders') idolatrous worship, the people's backs were turned to God as they bowed down. They had literally turned their back on the presence of God. Repentance means to turn. When we repent, we turn away from our sin and move toward where God wants us to be...in fellowship with Him. When we sin (even sins of the heart) our hearts are turn away from the Lord. We must repent.
God gave the elders a strong ultimatum. He told the elders that if they ever made a prophet prophecy in their "flavor" (against the truth and righteousness of God) He would strike them down. He reminded them that Israel would be His people and He will be their God. It wasn't a matter of IF God was going to do what He said. It was a matter of whether the people were going to be on His side, with their backs turned to wickedness.
