These verses call for respect for those in the church who are older. This does not necessarily mean those who have the office of an elder. Timothy who was at this time a younger man was to handle complaints of sinful behavior of older men with the utmost care. The same care was to be made of older women of the church. Younger women were also treated with utmost care. There was no room for flirtation or remarks not becoming for a minister of the Word, or even other men in the church. Much harm has been made by men in the churches about this very thing. It gives way to much fodder for those in the church who are prone to gossip.
The next few verses are about widows who were on church rolls as those who needed to be supported with food and clothing and other necessities. Because of our governmental system there isn't quite as much need among the churches today. However we must be on the lookout for the needs of widows today. Because of our social security and welfare system, many churches have overlooked these needs today. We must be careful not to say "Let the government take care of it."
