In these verses Jeremiah is commissioned by God to be a prophet. In our verses there are some symbols, such as the almond tree known in that day as the hastening tree or the tree with the earliest fruit of the season. God used this to say how quick He would judge Jerusalem for her sins.
Next was a seething pot, or what we would call a cauldron of boiling water ready to throw meat into. This represented the fact that armies of the Babylonians were converging on Jerusalem. It was all because of the peoples worship of multiple gods, and not the sovereign God of Israel.
Now God tells Jeremiah to belt up his loins, and be ready for a battle. He was to go to a fierce people, and if we read the rest of the book we will find out how fierce they were. When someone tells the people how wrong they are, they can get that way even to kill us when Cain killed Abel.
Now we have some more symbols as to how God's protective power would be to Jeremiah. He uses terms like, a defensed city, an iron pillar, and brazen walls. God would do all that for Jeremiah while he told the people how wrong they were and judgement was coming.
Now in application if God has commissioned us for anything. He will give the fortitude and backing and inner strength to carry it out. I can personally testify of this.
