Jeremiah 29:1-14

The verses today are the content of a letter Jeremiah was to send to the captives carried away to Babylon. I will go over some of these contents below.

The first is that there would be a time of seventy years that they would be captives, which was the actual reign of the Babylonian kings. While they were there they were to carry on normal lives. They were to seek the peace of the city where they were living. God's people are to be a peaceful people. Even we who are Christians who are citizens of Heaven, not belonging to this world are to be a productive peace loving people.

While they were in Babylon, they were not to listen to false prophets that promised them things they could not produce. We do find this in our society today too. I will not elaborate on this.

The promise of the seventy years after the Babylonian kings was fulfilled under Cyrus the King of Persia who was pre-named by Isaiah before he was born. The last verse could have two fulfillments. It could be the days of Cyrus and it could be when Christ comes again to reign. The last thing I can say is much of this has been fulfilled by our Sovereign God. Also what promises of God that are for us will also come true in due time if we only base our hope in Him.
