In today's quiet time, I found myself asking the question, "Wasn't it wrong for Jonathan and David to connive this plan and lie to King Saul in order to figure out if David was in serious trouble?" The answer is yes. I think they would done well to just send Jonathan in and have him ask his father the king if he wanted to have David killed. But, I definitely understand their fear of the situation. They knew well that King Saul was erratic and unstable emotionally. They knew that he might do something hurtful and irreparable. So, they came up with this plan to lie about David's absence to see how King Saul would react, and thought of a way to communicate the answer to their question in secret.
Saul's behavior forced others into difficult situations. His sin was effecting many, especially considering his place of authority, and it brought fear to their hearts.
It is so easy for us to forget how much our own sin can effect others. Let's strive to please the Lord and live in victory and righteousness for His glory, and for the benefit of those around us!
