At the feet of Jesus! - Matthew 26:1-16

Now that Jesus has finished His last major teaching discourse, He begins a series of events leading to the cross. The passage tells us that the passover is at hand. This feast, where a spotless lamb was sacrificed and the blood presented to God, reminded the Jews that God had provided a means to escape the judgment that fell upon all those who were not "covered" by blood. At the same time that the disciples are making plans for the passover, the religious leaders are making plans to put Jesus(the Lamb of God) to death.

Jesus and the disciples stop to eat in Bethany at Simon the lepers' house. Mary, Martha and Lazarus are also at the house. The Gospel of John identifies Mary as the one who anoints Jesus with the ointment. We can learn many things from her life and testimony.

1. Ministry - Mary is mentioned 3 times in the Gospels and every time she is at the feet of Jesus. Mary helps us understand that our main ministry is to love and worship Jesus. All the rest of the Christian life flows from this.
2. Misunderstanding - Each time Mary was at Jesus' feet she was misunderstood by others. Martha wanted her to leave Jesus and help her serve the food(Luke 10:38-42). The crowd thought she was crazy to leave her grieving for Lazarus to go to Jesus' feet(John 11:28-32). Now, Judas and the other disciples rebuke her for wasting money by anointing Jesus. Those who are wholly devoted to Jesus Christ will often be misunderstood by others, often other believers. Remember that when others misunderstand, no one understands like Jesus! He recognizes our love and devotion and will reward us for our faithfulness to Him!
3. Message - Unlike the disciples, who were influenced by the philosophy of the world through Judas, Mary was steadfast in her love for the Lord Jesus. Judas was committed to his own plans, pleasures and possessions. We must constantly be on guard so that the world does not draw us into its self centered philosophy. It is not all about us(even our plans to feed the poor) it is all about Him and doing His will!
