In our pasage today, Jesus recalls Daniel 9:27, "And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate." Many have thought that this passage was pointing toward Antiochus Epiphanes who in 167 B.C. offered a pig in the temple and set up an image of himself to be worshipped. While this grevious sin was an abomination and though it does resemble the sin written of in this passage, Antiochus is not the man. This final week in Daniel's prophecy is the tribulation period. That seven year period which follows the rapture of the church and precedes the Second Coming of Christ. In the middle of this week, the Anti-Christ will himself declare that he is god and worthy of worship. After this event, the worst of the tribulation will take place.
The end of our reading today clearly instructs us about the Second Coming of Christ. We can learn a couple of things from these verses:
1. Christ will not come quietly. There will be no debate. The whole world will know He has arrived.
2. The entire world will mourn, knowing He is the Christ, and that their judgment is at hand.
3. The saints will be gathered victoriously with Christ. We will be coming with Him in victory, to rule and reign with Him!
WE WIN! No matter what happens to us in this life, we have the ultimate victory through Jesus Christ our Lord! Praise God!
