In our parable today we get a history lesson and a look into the future...
The king who is preparing this marriage feast is God the Father. He has extended His invitiation to the nation of Israel. This invitation has been declined by most. The nation of Israel failed to follow after and fear God. As a result, God began to use the work of some other servants, the apostles. Some accepted this invitation to the celebration, but most did not. In fact, verse 6 reminds us that the Jews persecuted and slew the men of God who were laboring. Verse 7 was their consequence. In AD 70, Jerusalem fell to the Roman empire. The king then allowed the servants to go out into the highways and bid anyone to come to the marriage feast. This is the church. Praise God! We have been invited to the marriage feast!
Verses 11-14 are a warning to the person who claims to be a Christian in their own self-righteousness. They may even claim to have trusted Christ for their salvation, but in reality they are working hard to be righteous, trying to do the right thing, having never put their faith in God for their salvation. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, "For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him." When you trust Christ for your salvation, you are inputed with His righteousness. We are "clothed" in the righteousness of Christ. There is no other garment which will be adequate for attendance to the great marriage supper. "For there is none righteous, no not one." (Romans 3:10) Matthew 7:21-23 is an example of this person. They may cry out "Lord, Lord!" They may give a list of all their works and explain how they healed and cast out demons. But, if they have not subjected themselves to His work, and have not been clothed in the righteousness of Jesus Christ, He will say, "Depart from Me, you worker of iniquity."
Are you clothed in the righteousness of Christ? Has there ever been a time in your life that you have confessed to Him that you are a sinner, believed in His sacrificial death, burial and resurrection, and asked Him to be your Lord and Savior? If you have not, please do not hesitate to do so right now.
