There are times we feel that we may not be in a position to do anything good for God. Nehemiah was different. He was a captive in a strange land. Now in this reading he is cup bearer to the king. He could have said there wasn't anything he could do.
Another thing was the pitiful position of the Jews at Jerusalem that made him very sad. Sad enough to want to do something. He could have said: too bad, I'm doing okay. The important thing is he didn't, and because of this the king granted him permission to go back and do something. Notice his momentary prayer to God.
He was not satisfied to just go back. Now that he had the ear of the king, he needed official permission and resources to do his work, and an army and horsemen.
The lesson I get for myself is that there are things that can be done beyond my imagination if my heart is really in it. There is also the phrase "according to the good hand of my God upon me." This personal God we need more than anything else.
