Who is this man, John the Baptist? Up to this time we find that everything was always victorious. He was indwelt by the Holy spirit even from his mothers womb and very successful knowing God was with him in all that he did. Didn't he say of Jesus, "He must increase and I must decrease?" We don't mind decreasing but John probably didn't imagine how much cost this would be to his life.
His faith begins to turn into doubt, so he sends his disciples to ask Jesus, "Are you really the One or should we look for another?" How did Jesus answer? "Tell John what you have seen." All they saw were signs of His Messiahship. He offered no other explanation. He said one more thing, "Blessed is he who is not offended in Me." For me personally that speaks volumes. Paul said, "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ." I don't need to be either. Jesus then goes on to commend John as one of the greatest born among women. And His forerunner and messenger to go before Him, but He concludes with something interesting to me. That is whoever is least in the kingdom of Heaven is greater than He. Could that mean me? Could that mean you? Read Jesus prayer in John Chapter 17.
Next Jesus compares the attitude of the world with John and Himself. Always out of step with God and His ways. We must take inventory of our own lives.
