I hope that you did not worry when you read verses 31 and 32 this morning in your quiet time... If you are saved today, you have not committed the unpardonable sin. What is that sin? Ultimately, the only sin which can not be forgiven is to die without accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. People who commit this sin fight against the work of the Holy Spirit and will not be forgiven. If you are still unsure, check out verse 33. "The tree is known by his fruit." Are you producing fruit for the kingdom of God? If you are, you can rest assured that you have the power of the Holy Spirit working in your life. What an amazing blessing!
The scribes and pharisees in verse 38 should remind us much of our present world. They wanted proof. Our society today is constantly on the look-out for scientific evidence to discover the origin of man and the universe as a whole. Just like the pharisees and scribes, it would not matter for most what proof you provide, or even if their opposing proofs were discovered to be invalid, as many of them have. They are an "evil generation" and will reject their Creator. Furthermore, the proof that Jesus promises in verse 40 should be sufficient. We have a savior who was crucified, buried, and rose again to everlasting life! What further proof do we need!
Verses 41 and 42 were especially grueling to the Jewish leaders. We should remember from the story of Jonah how much the Israelites hated the people of Nineveh. Yet Christ declares that those people would be able to stand in judgment for their unbelief in the God who chose them as His people! We must remember to stay humble before our God and to be willing to learn in order to not become like these "religious" leaders who felt they had arrived.
