Jesus pronounces woes on the Pharisees, Scribes and Lawyers in these verses. These were the legalistic people of the day. All of these boasted of their keeping of the law of Moses. In the first instance was the tithing of even the smallest of seeds, but failing in justice and love of God. They also looked for chief seats in the synagogues and places of importance. When Jesus spoke of this the lawyers were convicted. Jesus then has words for them. Jesus said they have taken away the key of knowledge of which they didn't enter. What did they take away? What was the key of knowledge? To me this was the proper interpretation of the Old Testament prophesies which would have brought them to the truth about the Lord Jesus Christ. Looking at the above can so called Christians be guilty too. They can emphasize tithing above real devotion to God and His ways. They surely can be engrossed in self importance. They can be legalistic and not bring out the truth about Jesus Christ that is the real key that would set the people free. These people above were ready to kill Him because He said these things. Now it is time for my own self examination. Am I guilty of one or more of the above? If so I better change my ways.
