We don't always understand the ways of God. David had very good thoughts about building a house or temple for God to dwell in. Up to this time it was just in a tent and David thought: "Shouldn't He have a real house to dwell in?" Of course God cannot be contained in a house He who fills the universe. However, the tabernacle did have a representation in the part which is the "Holiest of All" representing the very dwelling of God.
Now David was told that he could not build the house but that his son Solomon would build it. David was content with that, but he was not content to just wait and do nothing at all. He set about to make all the materials for the temple beginning with the altar for the burnt offering then the hewing of the stones, the Cedar logs, and even down to the nails that would hold the doors together. Solomon then could begin the work with greater ease knowing this was already prepared.
This teaches me that even though I am stopped from a certain work which was on my heart, it doesn't hinder me from preparing for and helping the one who was chosen to do it.
One more thing our present temple is the church made up of people as living stones and we can all be builders together in that. This is the greater house that God spoke to David about.
